The Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery (HPB) Program provides state-of-the-art treatment for patients with primary and metastatic cancers of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct and pancreas. The program also treats benign disease including cysts, biliary strictures and bile duct injuries.
Hepatobiliary pancreatic disorders have typically following symptoms:
1. Non specific or Generic eg weight loss , anorexia ie loss of appetite, fatigue , weakness, lethargy , pruritus ie itching , vomiting nausea etc
2. Specific eg Jaundice , lump , hematemesis ie blood vomiting , malena ie black stools, bleeding per rectum , ascites ie water in abdomen , pain , backpain , gastric outlet obstruction , pancrsatitis , fever due to cholangitis, etc.
Hepatobiliary pancreatic disorders can be varied between benign cystic diseases to infections to worms eg ascariasis and others to even complex benign tumors like Adenoma to FNH ie Fibronodular Hyperplasia to Hemangioma to complex cancer of liver Gallbladder bile duct Pancreas to rarer hormonal tumors like Neuroendocrine tumors or insulinoma , gastrinoma , VIPoma , Somatostatinoma , Glucagonoma etc . There are many possibilities of cure for many of the above . In fact almost all except the last stage cancers or advanced cancers ( although some maybe amenable to surgery up front or after Neo Adjuvant therapies.) .
Hepatobiliary: Having to do with the liver plus the gallbladder, bile ducts, or bile. For example, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can be applied to the hepatobiliary system. Hepatobiliary makes sense since "hepato-" refers to the liver and "-biliary" refers to the gallbladder, bile ducts, or bile.
Physicians perform hepatobiliary imaging to evaluate disorders that affect liver cells, the ducts of the biliary system and the gallbladder. Hepatobiliary imaging is also used to help diagnose symptoms such as: abdominal pain that may be caused by a sudden inflammation of the gallbladder called cholecystitis.
Ultrasound is the least invasive radiologic modality for imaging the liver and biliary tract. Unlike computed tomographic scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the technique is portable, quick, and can be used to efficiently guide interventional procedures.
The surgical treatment of diseases of the gall bladder, liver and pancreas (hepatobiliary system) and oesophagus, stomach and small bowel (upper gastrointestinal tract) is performed under the care of the general surgeon who has a specialist interest in upper gastrointestinal surgery.
Hepatobiliary Disease. Hepatobiliary disease includes a heterogeneous group of diseases of the liver and biliary system caused by viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections, neoplasia, toxic chemicals, alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, metabolic disorders, and cardiac failure.
Hepatobiliary (HIDA) Scan With/Without CCK- Hepatobiliary imaging is a type of nuclear medicine imaging that helps evaluate the liver, gallbladder and the ducts that are part of the biliary system.
Hepatobiliary tumors are abnormal growths occurring on or in the liver, bile ducts, and biliary tract, the tubes that carry bile from the liver or gallbladder to the small intestine
Hepatobiliary cancers have following symptoms depending on type of cancer:
1. Primary HCC or ICC ie Liver cancers can have lump , Jaundice, pain at times, weight loss , anorexia, fever , cholangitis , features of underlying cirrhosis ie CLD , liver failure etc.
2. Gallbladder cancers present with stone disease or lump or mass or pain or infection or Jaundice or with spread to other organs area and according symptoms.
3. Biliary cancers are mostly causing Jaundice or cholangitis ie bile infection giving rise to pain fever Jaundice or stones and also can present with pancreatitis or metastatic disease.
Other than these can have locoregionally advanced disease causing gastric outlet obstruction with vomiting or portal vein obstruction with varices, GI bleeds etc or colon obstruction causing intestinal obstruction pain, etc.
