What are Pancreatic SURGERIES ??

The types of Pancreatic  surgeries Done varies as per location of disease in part of the gland .

Broadly divided into head neck uncinate , body and tail of Pancreas. Tumors or cancers for head neck uncinate area usually lands up with a very complex surgery called whipples operation where following structures are removed in order to remove the mass , namely gallbladder bile duct part,  duodenum with or without small part of stomach and 10cm of jejunum from duodenojejunal flexure with head neck uncinate of Pancreas along with lymph nodes . Sometimes even parts of blood vessels are removed and reconstructed by various means namely portal vein , SMV resection reconstruction or hepatic arterial trifurcation or SMA or part of IVC .

Body tail tumors or cancers are resected by either distal Pancreatosplenectomy or by more extensive surgery called RAMPS ie Radical Antegrade modular Pancreatosplenectomy.  Distal Pancreatectomy can be done by spleen preserving method as well .

Rarely another surgery is done for small tumors or more likely small benign or borderline tumors or cystic neoplasm of Pancreas by wedge or central or median Pancreatectomy.  These surgeries are mostly done by open surgery but in selective cases can be done by laparoscopy or robotic or a combined hybrid method .
